Practice and principle module overview

Context:

We are surrounded by visual communications. Most are inspired in some way by historical theory, design principles and contemporary exploration in some way. Whether we use illustration, photography, moving image, audio or lettering to communicate, we see and hear messages constantly on different platforms all day (phones, billboards, bus stops, TV, radio, social media, magazines, cereal packets and more). This module will encourage you to find and observe graphic communications, critically (not just descriptively) analyse them, and think about the design principles and professional practices involved in producing the visual communications. You will evaluate award winning designs and apply what you learnt to your own ideas development and design process. You will be introduced to many different areas of practice including: typography, editorial design, advertising, brand design, packaging, way finding, info-graphics, motion graphics, UX, AI and more. You will explore practices and forms of communication that are persuasive (e.g advertising, branding and packaging) and communications that are informative (e.g editorial, way finding and infographics), and will discuss the different design approaches used to communicate with different audiences.

Assessment scope (The scope and range of the assessment) Your body of work will comprise evidence of your Key Principles and Typography task, your research of design practices, your ideas generation, audience research, ideas development, skills development and final outcomes for:

Project 1: Arkitekt Magazine – front cover, 2 x double-page spreads, your own images, edited text, and a full page advert.

Project 2. A campaign to raise awareness of a social cause - you may include brand design, advertising, info-graphic, packaging in your submission that demonstrates how the campaign has:

_Been informed by a process of research

_Emerged from the acquisition of new skills and techniques

_Given consideration to a range of ideas and visual approaches

_Been subject to an iterative design process through the student undertaking mini cycles of reflection and evaluation

_An exploration of wider contextual issues relating to the discipline, evidenced through a written submission and/or equivalent presentation

Module Learning outcomes:

1. Utilise a range of appropriate research methods to communicate an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice

2. Create visual solutions through a range of projects, which are informed by key ideas, techniques and principles of the course.

3. Present concepts, ideas and visual outcomes that engage a defined audience 4. Reflectively evaluate learning in the creative development process
